FAQs
-
Sex therapy is a form of talk therapy/counselling intended to help individuals and couples resolve sexual difficulties, such as performance anxiety, painful sex, erectile dysfunction or relationship problems due to unmatched sexual desires and life transitions.
Some choose to attend sessions alone; others bring their partner with them. Session frequency usually depend on the client and the type of problem being addressed.
It’s normal to feel anxious when seeing a sex therapist, especially for the first time. Many people have trouble talking about sex let alone discussing it with a stranger may feel awkward. However, with our therapists that ASSECT Certified or working towards certification we recognize this and work with you to make sure you feel not judged and safe to work towards healing.
-
After a short chat on the phone, if it feels like a good fit and you want to meet, you will schedule a first appointment. There will be some forms to complete that you will be either emailed to you or can be completed in-person before your first session.
At your first session your therapist will go over the forms you signed and then ask you something like, ‘so what brings you in today?” And from there a conversation will unfold as you share what you feel compelled to share.
Your therapist will ask questions so they may get a sense of who you are and what your life looks like. Don’t worry if you don’t know what to talk about it. It can sometimes take a few sessions to decide if you wish to commit to weekly sessions. It’s a unique relationship and making sure it’s a good fit is important. We are in full support of however this process unfolds for you.
